Planning a Long Weekend in Ranthambore? Here is a 3-Day Plan for You
Planning a quick trip to Ranthambore? A long weekend is actually the perfect amount of time. You get to see the tigers, visit the famous fort, and still have time to relax at a luxury resort in Ranthambore.
Since many guests ask for the best way to spend their 3 days, here is a simple plan. It covers everything from the jungle safaris to the local food and temples.
Day 1: Reach Ranthambore and Relax a Bit
Most people arrive at the Sawai Madhopur station or drive in by lunch. After checking into the hotel, don't rush into the jungle immediately. Take it easy on the first day.
- Afternoon (1:00 PM – 3:30 PM): Have a nice, hot Rajasthani lunch. If you’ve picked a luxury resort in Ranthambore with a pool, this is the best time for a quick swim. It helps you get rid of all the travel tiredness.
- Evening (4:00 PM – 6:30 PM): Instead of the main park, go for a boat safari at the Chambal River (Palighat). It is about 45 minutes away. You’ll see crocodiles and gharials basking in the sun. It’s very peaceful and a great way to start the holiday.
- Night: Return to the resort, enjoy the bonfire, and listen to some local folk music. This is also when you should talk to the staff to get the "daily update" on which zones had the best tiger sightings today.
Day 2: The Big Safari Day
This is the day you go into the wild. To really increase your chances of seeing a tiger, you should try to book both the morning and the afternoon safaris.
- Morning Drive (6:00 AM – 10:00 AM): Wake up early! The jungle is most alive at dawn. If you are staying at a resort near Ranthambore National Park gate, you don't have to travel far. Just 5 minutes and you are at the gate.
- Lunch & Rest (11:00 AM – 2:30 PM): Come back, have a heavy breakfast, and maybe take a nap. The afternoon sun can be strong, so resting in your AC Swiss Tent or room is the best idea.
- Afternoon Drive (3:00 PM – 6:30 PM): Head back for the second round. Many times, tigers come out to drink water as the evening gets cooler.
- Expert Tip: Even if you don't see a tiger, the sunrise in the forest and the alarm calls of the deer are an experience you won't forget.
Day 3: Fort Visit, Temple, and Shopping
On your last day, take a break from the jeeps and see the history of this place.
- Morning (8:30 AM – 11:00 AM): Visit the Ranthambore Fort. It is a UNESCO site and the views from the top are just amazing. While you are there, go to the Trinetra Ganesh Temple. It’s a very famous temple and people come from all over India to send wedding invitations to this Ganesha!
- Shopping (11:30 AM – 1:00 PM): On your way back, stop at a local craft center like Dastkar. You can buy beautiful hand-block print clothes and bags made by local women. It’s better than buying mass-produced things from the main market.
- Departure: Have a final lunch, pack your bags, and head out.
Things to Remember (Expert Advice):
- Book Permits Early: If you want Zones 1 to 5, book 3-4 months in advance. Because the most popular Ranthambore resorts and zones are fill up fast.
- Gypsy vs Canter: If you are a group of 5-6 people, always take a private Gypsy. It’s quieter and can go into narrow paths where the big Canters can't reach.
- Earth Colours: Wear clothes in brown, khaki, or olive green. Bright red or yellow colors can disturb the animals.
Final Thoughts
Three days is enough to fall in love with the jungle. Just stay close to the gates, keep your camera ready, and remember—the jungle always has a surprise for those who are patient.
